UPDATE!

Monday, December 3, 2018

7:00 pm

LAMBIASE PLAZA
(The triangle at Newark Avenue and Monmouth Street)

Many decades ago, an evergreen tree in the triangle at Newark Avenue and Monmouth Street was decorated with lights for the holiday season by residents of the Village. Since 2013, the Village Neighborhood Association, with the generous support of the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District (HDSID), has brought this holiday tradition back to the neighborhood!

Like last year, the VNA will be raising money to purchase gifts for students who are most in need from PS5. To achieve our goal of raising $200, the VNA will be offering ornaments to personalize and hang on the tree for a small donation of $10.

To purchase an ornament after the tree lighting, please attend our next VNA meeting on December 10th, or send an email to [email protected]

Hot cocoa will be served. Bring the kids!

Happy Holidays!

PUBLIC NOTICE
Action requested. Development Project at 141 Brunswick St.
Share from James Solomon, Ward E Councilperson

Alert: Asking for your support to stop development project.

1) On Thursday 9/20, the Zoning Board will hear a developer’s proposal to deviate significantly from the new R-5 zone by adding extra height and density at 141 Brunswick St. Passed in 2017, the R-5 zone is a reasonable compromise between community members, city planning and developers. It already allows for significant density. To immediately deviate from it, allowing extra stories and units, would be a mistake and set a dangerous precedent for the future. The Village Neighborhood Association opposes the project in its current form. The zoning board meet at City Hall (280 Grove St.) at 6:30 on Thursday.

280 Grove Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302

VNA residents noticed that new construction on Newark Avenue appeared taller than what was depicted in the building plans previously provided to the VNA and approved by the City. After further investigation it was discovered that the builder had inserted “mezzanines” which increased the height and square footage of the construction without approvals or notice to the City or community.

What followed was a successful legal fight by the VNA with the support of the DCNA to enforce the land ordinance rules regarding “mezzanines” to stop and prevent builders from disregarding the building rules to the detriment of the community.

The VNA will continue to fight for adherence to and enforcement of the applicable rules on new development.
